The Syrian Refugee Crisis is the worst humanitarian emergency of our time.
Syria is a country in the Middle East. It is roughly the same size and population as New York State.
In 2010, this was Syria. Developed, culturally vibrant, and commercially productive. Like other developed countries, it had universities, hospitals, skyscrapers, shopping malls, highways, and fast food.
In March 2011, fifteen young boys were accused of drawing graffiti in Syria in support of pro-democracy movements happening across the Middle East. In response, the Syrian Government jailed and tortured them. One of the boys died. This led to peaceful protests across Syria.
In response to these demonstrations, President Bashar al-Assad cracked down hard. The Syrian Government jailed and killed hundreds of innocent protesters.
In response to the Syrian Government's harsh reaction, rebel groups formed, and the Syrian Civil War began.
It is now 2017. It has been almost six years of fighting. The chaos shows no sign of slowing. The Syrian Government has used massive bombing campaigns, illegal chemical weapons, and blockades of food and medical care destined for its citizens. Many of the hundreds of rebel groups, including ISIS, have matched this brutality. And Syria has been ripped apart.
More than 250,000 people have lost their lives.
More than 11 million people have had to leave their homes.
And it is estimated that more than 4.7 million people have left the country, hoping to bring themselves and their loved ones to safety.
Syrian refugees are in desperate need of help. They need collective shelters, food, clean water, sanitation, medical resources, and basic every day necessities, like blankets, clothes, diapers, and hygiene products. Which means what they really need is money.
What we're doing
We are a hot sauce company in Brooklyn, NY. Last year, we launched a campaign to help support Bernie Sanders’ Presidential Campaign. In just a few weeks, we were able to raise thousands of dollars, and we saw the possibility of using hot sauce as a vehicle to contribute to the kind of world we’d like to see.
Over the past few months, we’ve learned about the Syrian conflict and we've seen countless pictures of people across the world who are just like us and who need our help.
The American Refugee Committee is a charity that is mobilizing to give Syrian refugees the assistance they need. It has been given high ratings by independent watchdog groups including CharityWatch and Charity Navigator. 100% of all profits from sales will be donated.
